Mussel Discs
In the spring of 1999 we incurred some heavy product losses as the adult mussels sloughed off of the mussel socks on which they were growing during a big wind storm; and this wasn't the first time that this had happened.
Like most mussel farmers, we had tried to keep sloughing to a minimum by keeping socking densities to a minimum as well as by using the tried and true Spanish method of putting stakes in the socks like rungs on a ladder to help support the weight of the mussels growing on the sock.
Despite our staking efforts we still lost a fair amount of adult mussels in bad weather, and we realized that we needed more than just a two dimensional stake to support the weight of the mussels growing above it; and the idea of multiple stakes gave rise to the idea of a Disc which could be inserted into the mussel sock, and we then developed and patented the idea into what we now call the "Mussel Disc".
Since the development of this idea, we have come up with a very efficient way of incorporating the Mussel Disc into a new system of reseeding mussels, a system we call the "Disc-Net-Line System", which may be used for individual mussel socks or continuous mussel socks as used in longline culture.

We are currently marketing this product to other mussel farmers world wide, from New Zealand to Norway and from Canada to Chile.
