Futon Tansu
"Keyaki (Zelkova)" wood, circa 1880
This is one of the most
incredible tansu you will ever see. The entire face of the tansu is
made of Keyaki (Zelkova), the most highly prized wood of Japan. Normally Keyaki is used sparingly on tansu, except for the very old and
most highly prized pieces. It is rare that the frame would be made
of keyaki...it makes this piece very heavy, but fortunately it is in 2
pieces. The ironwork is, of course, hand forged. The door
locks with a sliding bar hidden in the carved piece across the center of
the door. This tansu is large enough to hold an entertainment
center, or it would be teriffic for blankets, pillows, quilts,
ect.

Butsudan
(Buddhist Shrine)
"Hinoki
(Cypress)" wood, circa 1880
This is an
amazing piece with charming lattice shoji doors and overhead venting (for
candles). It is extremely well made of hinoki (cypress) and has
heavy hand forged iron on the front. It would be wonderful if it
could once again hold a Buddhist shrine, but the bi-fold shoji open up to
a huge storage area large enough for an entertainment center or other
storage. This is a real collectors item and rare to find in this
country.

This is a wonderful kaidandansu (step tansu) in great
condition. The face of the drawers is beautiful Keyaki wood
(Zelkova). The carcass is made of black lacquer on the frame.
It comes with a handrail which you may or may not choose to use.
Step tansu are very difficult to find in Japan these days and if and when
you do find one, it will be very expensive. An extremely good
investment.

A wonderful, contemporary
Butsudan (Buddhist shrine for the home). It is black lacquer over
Hinoki (I think) and is in excellent condition. It sits on a red
lacquer stand. The interior is hand carved with gold leaf. Two
electrical lanterns hang on each side of the interior, so when the shear
interior doors are closed the piece becomes a wonderful lighted accent for
your room. It is in excellent condition.
